The supercomputer Watson is getting ready for the Swedish healthcare – New Technology

The hyped supercomputer Watson is prepared for the arrival of the Swedish healthcare. Treatment and diagnosis of cancer is on the agenda. Within a year, all the world’s knowledge of cancer coming Swedish medical benefit.

Since the beginning of work IBM in Sweden towards a new goal; supercomputer Watson will be adapted to the Swedish healthcare. The focus is cancer, a disease that affects more and more Swedes.

Since 2011, the supercomputer trimmed to give doctors suggestions on everything from the best treatment for a particular patient for further testing needs to be done. The system sifts relevant information from 300 medical journals, 200 books, 15 million pages of medical information and a variety of clinical studies. Everything runs on information in the patient’s record.

The amount of information is enormous and is growing steadily. And with that Watson’s knowledge.

First to use “Dr. Watson” in care were American Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center. Here the platform since 2013 as a decision support for physicians.

– Watson does not make decisions, the doctor always has the final word. But as doctors keep abreast of everything that happens within the cancer is an insurmountable task. Here Watson can act as a coach, says Torbjörn Hägglöf at IBM.

The supercomputer, which prefer English, is partly to learn to understand the Swedish language. It is a must to records in Swedish can be integrated.

The alignment to the Swedish healthcare and its guidelines are already well prepared, but no decision on procurement of Care Sweden is not yet available.

– We call all needed an orderly introduction of the system in Sweden. These include SKL (Swedish Association of Local Authorities and Regions, editor’s note), regional cancer center, the National Board of Health and Social Affairs.

It is hoped that Sweden should join the handful of countries that have already begun using Watson oncology. Freshest China as two weeks announced that they now have service at 21 hospitals. Cancer is the leading cause of death in the country and last year took 2.8 million lives. In time, physicians in 250 Chinese hospitals have access to decision support.

Meanwhile, IBM Watson to sharpen skills.

– Watson can read but needs to learn to see. It needed to be able to interpret images from computed tomography and magnetic resonance imaging, says Torbjörn Hägglöf.

This allows radiologists to get relief in efforts to interpret the images for diagnosis. The result can be faster diagnosis and treatment.

– It is well known that the earlier the cancer is detected and can put a scientifically based treatment, the better the prognosis for the patient. With Watson oncology patient may also have direct access to a “second opinion” in the form of knowledge from the best cancer doctors in the world.

If everything would go like clockwork, when would Watson able to step into the Swedish healthcare?

– As the scientific basis is already in place, it should be done within a year.

Professor Jonas Bergh, responsible for the strategic cancer research at Karolinska Institutet and senior physician at the Radium home at Karolinska, want to ensure that the system really works.

– if you get a system that is out of the running text can extract relevant medical facts in terms of the type of tumor, tumor characteristic extent of the tumor, which medicines have been given and the effects of medicines, it would be fantastic.

– If, and I mean IF, it works, it would be fantastic for research and revolutionary for the clinical activities. Sweden, in contrast to the US stunning records on the entire population and patients who have had a cancer that does not allow cross today, says Jonas Bergh.

The supercomputer broke through as champions in Jeopardy

Watson is a so-called cognitive computer system. This means that the system can quickly analyze and draw conclusions from the extremely large data sets. Also, learn the system to its previous analysis.

Behind the innovation, the global computer giant IBM.

In 2011, the supercomputer a world celebrity when it defeated two American grandmasters in the quiz Jeopardy. Hardware met when an entire room. Since then, Watson has shrunk to a size corresponding to three pizza boxes and moved up in the cloud.

Super ability of the computer to second quickly analyze large amounts of unstructured information, such as scientific papers, used today as active decision-making in cancer care in several countries but also for mobile applications in everything from financial advice to recipes for cooking.

the use of healthcare became the first commercial application.
