Record number of women want to become civil engineers – New Technology

Suddenly it happens. More girls are looking to engineering education. Even in the computer and IT lines the percentage has increased in several locations.

The six girls in the picture have just started reading electrical line at KTH. They are awaited and very full of expectation. They want to develop gadgets and save the world. Emma Karlberg was a crazy mercenary small. Malin Häggström longs to be innovative. Everyone likes physics and math.

Several have a father who is a civil engineer. Just Ylva Modahl boasts a mom with a degree from KTH.

All read natural sciences in high school, with one exception: Petronella Holmberg, who read the image and shape, and then passed architect line for two years.

– But I lacked the math, so I went technological base year. And now I have chosen electro that I am very interested in sound. Yes, everything related to frequencies and radio waves to make.

KTH has a record number of female applicants in engineering lines of autumn. Linköping University and Luleå University of Technology as well. Chalmers repeat last year’s record figure, and Lund reported the same top figure in 2014.

The final numbers are not clear yet. But figures from the so-called “sample 2 in admissions” usually do not differ significantly from finally registered students, according to the KTH President Peter Gudmundsson.

Ten years ago, the proportion of women among civil engineering students at KTH 24 percent . Now the proportion is over 35 percent.

– So in ten years, we should move towards a balance, says Peter Gudmundsson.

He is particularly pleased that the girls also found to data and iT lines. In information technology, KTH has increased from 15 to 20 percent girls, and it has the proportion passed 21-27 percent.

The special recruitment efforts directed toward girls in the program Giants, is certainly one of the reasons, according to Gudmundsson .

at Chalmers, the percentage of women enrolled in more than 35 percent, the same level as last fall.

Maria Knutson Wedel, assistant professor of materials engineering and Vice President with responsibility for undergraduate education at Chalmers, pointing to the five-line technical mathematics whose proportion of women has increased to 40 percent this year.

– and technically the base year, this year 39 percent of women, which is very positive because the majority then continues on engineering programs, says Maria Knutson Wedel.

She does not think it’s enough to try to attract girls with special recruitment efforts.

– We believe that the professional role needs to change to more girls will become interested. Our investment in sports technology, not least equestrian, seems to have that effect, although it was not the intention from the beginning. We wanted to test the applied research in the areas of our scientists was passionate.

Linköping University, the proportion of girls who applied to engineering programs increased from 32 to 34 percent since last year.

– A hypothesis is that girls in particular are increasingly studying science at secondary school, says Lena Pettersson, Director of education, Linköping University.

in Lund, the proportion of girls who want to become engineers has increased to 34 percent, which is just over half a percent more compared to last fall.
