Ericsson announces the world’s first 5G radio – Electronics Magazine

I summer Ericsson released a software module that provides today’s mobile networks 5G-like properties. Now comes the associated radio hardware that makes it possible for operators to test the commercial activities on the frequency bands up to 6 GHz.

The world’s first 5G radio. So Ericsson presents the new radio unit AIR 6468 which is also the first product in the family NR NR stands for New Radio. NR is a further development of the “cabin bag” which was released in November last year and is used by operators around the world in the field trials of 5G technology (link).

AIR 6468 is – like cabin bag – 64 pieces Channels for transmitting and 64 receiving.

– the basic functionality is massive MIMO and beamforming, and MU-MIMO. This functionality is the same in both products, so from that aspect, we have commercialized 5G concept of “cabin bag” explains Joakim Sorelius, which is responsible for 5G architecture, in an email message.

The operators can thus begin build commercial services that take advantage of features such as massive Mimo, Mimo to multiple users, virtualization of mobile networks, delays that shrinks down 1 ms and another that becomes reality with 5G.

in addition to the radio hardware in AIR 6468 required the same baseband used for cabin bag, ie Baseband 5216th

Meanwhile, further development of the cabin bag, located at 15 GHz and thus is meant for some applications other than AIR 6468 which handles frequencies up to 6 GHz.
