We’ve tested Google’s new video chat app – Mobile

As we have previously reported that Google will focus on Hangouts on the corporate world. The idea is that ordinary consumers should be shuffled into two new apps, Duo Video call and Allo to text messages. The former is available on Google Play in the US and we at Mobile downloaded .apk package to test drive the app. The fact that Google has now enabled mobilnummerverifikationen for Swedish phone number let’s do it.

The first thing that strikes one is how minimalist Duos interface. It seems like Google is inspired by the time when the company’s search engine was not much more than a search box on your screen. In short, it is an aesthetic step back toward its roots.

The Duo on Android, there are only three buttons on the screen, one that alternates between the front and rear camera, one that silences or activates the phone’s microphone and ending the video call. In the Iphone there is a button that allows the user to switch the audio source, such as from your phone to a Bluetooth headset or speaker.

An interesting feature of the app is called Knock Knock. This means that the caller appears in the display even before receiving the video call answering. This allows you to see the context in which the caller is and maybe it is something special that the person wants to view.

How to self looks in the recipient’s mobile you can see through a topside small round screen . It resembles the icon you see when you have a chat running in the background with Facebook Messanger. However, unlike the latter can not move the location of the circle on the screen. When switching to the phone’s main camera so looking receiver that view instead.

When it comes to picture and sound quality, it is impressively good. The video is crisp and not laggy, the same goes for the sound. Here, Google seems to have succeeded quite well, although it remains to be seen how it goes when your conversation partner are at a place with a little less speed and bandwidth.

Mobil’s first impression is that the Duo is very good at it it does, but what it does very little. It is not necessarily a disadvantage, and Google has also said that there are “few features solid very good” -like apply. But if you expect effect filters, emoji and multi-way video calling and you will probably be disappointed. It is clear that Google may implement more features in the future, depending on the response app, but you should probably not count on it.
