Now let the US its stranglehold on the Internet – IDG.se

After 20 years at the helm, the US is finally ready to give up the power of the network’s naming system, DNS. The first October that the organization ICANN will gain control over the work they have done for years.

It is a long awaited decision comes after several years of hard work from the organization.

– The is important that an individual country can no longer interfere in the ICANN process, there has always been a threat to the United States to interfere in the decisions that ICANN takes, even if they have not done it, says Patrik Falström is director of research at Netnod and chairman of the ICANN committee on security and stability.

DNS is a system that, among other pair of iP addresses and domain names. Without a system, you’d have to enter IDG’s IP numbers instead of “idg.se” in the address bar. Whoever controls the DNS also controls including the advent of new TLDs as when .club, .email or .guru created.

ICANN has effectively handled the job footwork with DNS long time, but to have to go in and make changes to directory system so-called root zone required formally approval from the US Government, through the telecoms ministry NTIA.

But in 2014 the US announced that they were ready to let go of the DNS, ICANN took certain measures. And this week announced that NTIA that they considered that the organization is ready to shoulder the responsibility of the catalog system as of October 1.

So how does ICANN today ? It is a nonprofit organization that is surrounded by a number of advisory groups representing including governments, civil society and the technology industry.

The Committee Patrik Field current leads is one such, and he says that NTIA’s announcement is proof that ICANN has built up a stable organization. Otherwise, the United States had never lost power.

So the web surfers will not notice any difference, but the decision is important in principle says Anders Hektor is Deputy Director of the Economy Department on IT policy and representing Sweden in the GAC , an advisory committee consisting of representatives from over 100 countries.

– the most important thing is that it increases the legitimacy of governance of the global, common Internet. So far, countries such as Russia have said that the US sits on the Internet “kill switch” and can control and block the root zone after their pleasure, he says.

There is no evidence that such a thing should have happened, but there is an objection that is not possible anymore when ICANN takes over.

If all goes as it should be ICANN formal power on 1 October. What can put a spoke in the wheel is that many Republicans in the US Congress oppose the decision, but so far they have not managed to put a stop to it.
