So far this year, KI has registered 14 complaints of misconduct in research, compared with zero-five complaints the previous five years, writes Swedish newspaper Svenska Dagbladet.

Centres Ethics Committee, which among other things examines cases of research misconduct to the institutions that submit notifications, also noted an increase.

– We have received ten cases this year, it’s “all time high”, says administrative director Jorgen Svidén to SvD.

According to an ongoing governmental investigation, all the country’s universities and colleges handled 112 cases of suspected research fraud 2010-2015. In 16 cases came universities concluded that it concerned research fraud.

The surgeon Paolo Macchiarini let inserting synthetic trachea in three patients. Two of them died, and shortly after the operations arose suspicion of research misconduct. The scandal led to several people in key positions within KI left their mission.
