Close to a billion Android devices threatened – IT.branschen

the security company check Point has found four new vulnerabilities in Android devices that could allow an attacker full control over the cell phone and access to sensitive information.

Among other things, the hackers access keylogger, GPS and have the ability to record video and audio. This may have affected over 900 million Android smartphones and tablets. The following models are affected:

• Samsung Galaxy S7 & amp; S7 Edge

• Sony Xperia Z Ultra

• Google Nexus 5X, 6 & amp; 6P

• HTC One M9 & amp; HTC 10

• LG G4, G5 & amp; V10

• Motorola Moto X

• OnePlus One, 2 & amp; 3

• BlackBerry priv

• Black Phone 1 & amp; 2

The hackers use a vulnerability Qualcomm chip found in the drivers for Qualcomm. Qualcomm is the world’s leading manufacturers of LTE chip and has 65% of the market. Check Point calls this vulnerability to QuadRooter.

An attacker could exploit the vulnerabilities by using a malicious application. This app requires no special permission to exploit the vulnerabilities, which in turn means that the attackers did not become suspicious.

– Vulnerabilities such QuadRooter focuses on the challenge of securing Android devices and their data. The supply chain is complex, meaning each update must be tested on each model affected by deficiencies. This process can take months, and users are exposed, and often not aware, over time. Android’s security is flawed and must be fixed, says Åsa Edner, Sweden Manager at Check Point.

The drivers are often pre-installed and can only be remedied by installing an update from the manufacturer. Check Point has released a free QuadRooter scanner app available in Google Play. With the help of the users can find out if their unit is affected, and download updates to fix the problem.
