Researchers have found a new gene linked to ALS – Sveriges Radio

The researchers in ALS Mine project, which received the support of the collected donations from icebucket Challenge, has now made a major breakthrough and found a new gene, C21orf2 , which is strongly associated with the disease.

Umeå Professor Peter Andersen received three million of the collected ishinksmiljonerna, distributed by the Brain Foundation, the European research project Mine.

There are now researchers made a major breakthrough by the discovery of a new gene that is strongly linked to the disease.

The results were published at the beginning of week in the prestigious journal Nature Genetics.

The findings are expected to lead to new ways to treat the fatal disease ALS on. The study is the largest ever made to inherited ALS.

– The gene has an unknown function, but it is very clear that with a change in the gene that increases the risk significantly to a person suffering from ALS, says Peter Andersen , professor of neurology at Umeå University.

From a fundamental point of view is the discovery is very important, and now begins the process of understanding how the gene works, says Andersen.

– There is great progress that has been made, he says.
