Report: Possible achieve fossil-free in five years – New Technology

In a new research report by Greenpeace and other environmental organizations ordered strikes researchers concluded that the Swedish goals of fossil electricity supply in 2040 could be achieved already in 2020.

The report 100 percent renewable electricity year 2020 – 2025 to 2030? is written by researchers at the University of Halmstad on behalf of WWF Sweden, Nature Conservation, Greenpeace and the organization 100 percent renewable. It addresses three possible scenarios to make the transition to fossil-free electricity supply to 5, 10 or 15 years.

Summary of the three scenarios to achieve 100 percent renewable electricity in Sweden. The decrease from the normal production in 2015 need to be 42 TWh.

The report aims to show how nuclear power in a short time can be replaced by renewable, when the reactors are decommissioned as a result of the effect of the tax. To succeed, switch faster than the 2040 needed energy efficiency and expansion of solar power. The report lists the following requirements as a condition for reaching fossil electricity supply in the shortest time, 2020:

  • The efficiency occurs at about the same extent as in the past five years.
  • Wind power expanded at a slower pace than that occurred in recent years.
  • Some offshore wind power is expanded.
  • the installations of solar cells increases significantly
  • Electricity from bioenergy largely generated in existing plants. The conversion can be carried out of the facilities, which currently only provides heat, power plant, which provides both electrical energy and heat.
  • A normal price level for both the electricity and electricity certificates needed for the construction of the new plants to happen to acceptable economic conditions.

– Sweden is one of the countries with the best conditions in the world to be a leader in the transition to renewable. It requires investment in renewables to ensure security of supply for households and industry. With this also creates thousands of climate-friendly projects, says Isadora Wronski at Greenpeace in a press release.
