People sitting down on the job at risk of dying prematurely. – Aftonbladet

People who sit down at work at risk of dying prematurely.

But an hour’s walk a day can reduce the risks, writes The Guardian.

a group of international experts has investigated the risks of spending a whole day on a desk chair. The study was recently published in the journal Lancet and is based on 16 previous studies done primarily in people over 45 from Western Europe, USA and Australia.

Sitting can lead to premature death

Scientists have concluded that 9.9 percent of those who sat down for eight hours a day and did not engage in much physical activity at risk of dying prematurely. Of those who put down less than four hours a day and touched for at least an hour a day risked 6.8 percent of premature death.

They also discovered that the risk sitting down eight hours a day but spends in physical activity at least one hour a day.

Professor Ulf Ekelund from the Norwegian School of sport Sciences and Cambridge University is one of the authors of the study.

– You do not do sports. You do not go to the gym. It’s okay to take some brisk walking, maybe in the morning, at lunch or after dinner. You can split it up over the day, but you have to go at least an hour in total, he tells The Guardian.

Recommends break every hour

Ulf Ekelund emphasizes that he is aware of that not everyone has the opportunity to go out and go to work.

– It is not easy to devote an hour a day in physical activity. But the average adult Briton watching television more than three hours a day. It is perhaps not too much to spare a part of the three hours of physical activity, he says.

He also recommends a five-minute break every hour to get up and move, even if it is only on a walk to the copier.
