Mercury has its solvandring – Sveriges Radio

– There is something!

– Yes, there it is! Yes!

A collection dedicated astronomy scientists are gathered in a room with a large telescope at the House of Science in Stockholm. The spectacular phenomenon of Mercury Passage has just occurred

– Yes, there it is! Then I start to shoot like crazy, says Henrik Åkerstedt, researcher in astronomy.

With clear weather over all over Sweden today interested can study the Mercury Passage. Henrik Åkerstedt explains the phenomenon:

– One imagines the solar system that flat, that all planets orbit in the same plane, the same path, then it should be like that passes ordinary, but actually moves everything in three dimensions. Then it is not so often that they cross each other in the same way. It’s basically the sun, Mercury and the Earth in the same line.

He continues:

– Just Mercury Passage happen sometime every 20 years maybe. It’s fun to be with and experience these kinds of rare things, says Henrik Åkerstedt.

Anna Larsson is studying physics with the aim of one day becoming an astronaut was also on place to witness the Mercury passage. In her ears dangling silver earrings in the shape of the planet Saturn. Interest in space occupies a large part of her life.

– It’s so cruel. This is my main interest in life. To actually get to see something concrete in front of the sun, it is like watching a celebrity, you followed so long and know so much about, and so you get to meet the person, or like today, see Mercury. It’s cool, says Anna Larsson.

Gösta Gahm, Professor emeritus of astronomy, has explained why many of us are fascinated by the movement of the planets:

– it’s like with celestial phenomena, eclipses and northern lights, to stop. You may know: what immense universe we live in, what strange things happening out there, and as we start to get on top. And there are many questions and riddles remain, says Gösta Gahm.
