First elvägen Started – New Technology

Today, Tuesday, test Scania and Siemens the world’s first elväg the E16 outside Gävle.

The world’s first elväg is almost finished. Two kilometers of the E16 between Sandviken and Kungsgården has been equipped with air lines that directly feed electric trucks through the pantograph on the cab roof. Today begins the first test runs.

– We test different voltages, do some mechanical tests, we test the system simply. The entire route is not quite ready yet, but it all goes according to plan, says Magnus Ernström, project Region Gavleborg.

The system has been developed by Scania and Siemens. Briefly, based on the low-voltage overhead lines (750 volts), designed as two-pole system for bidirectional transmission. The wire elements overlap and have weights at the ends, so they’ll fall down and break the power of an accident.

The truck is a Scania parallel hybrid with both electricity and diesel. As long as the pantographs in contact with the wires running the car on the electric motor. When leaving the electrified road network, or temporarily breaks the contact, for example when overtaking, hitting the truck automatically switches to the combustion engine.

When running back into the lines, looking pantograph itself up the thread and the car switches back to the electric motor. The pantograph can connect to and from the air line at speeds of up to 90 kilometers per hour.

Elvägen inaugurated in late June. Then two hybrid trucks operating between the daily, commercial operation for two years.
