Snowden hoping to get asylum in Sweden – Gothenburg Post

He is the world’s most famous whistleblower, and in recent years has lived in hiding in Russia. On Saturday, he spoke in front of 400 journalists in Gothenburg.

Edward Snowden is one of the world’s most hunted men. In the summer of 2013, he leaked documents revealed US intelligence NSA’s secret mass surveillance and home in the USA, he risks being sentenced to life imprisonment. In recent years, therefore, he spent at a secret location in Russia. Yesterday, he could be via video link to talk about monitoring before hundreds of Swedish journalists.

– Just because technology allows it does not mean that you should collect all the information about all the people, he says to the 400 the audience at the Association investigative journalists ‘seminar.

recent year’s terrorist attacks in Paris and Brussels has created a debate on whether it should be easier for authorities to monitor individuals’ telephone and email communication, a proposals that Edward Snowden is very critical.

– Governments always refer to terrorism in order to give themselves more opportunities to monitor. Everyone understands that terrorism is a major threat, but it is worthwhile to restrict many people’s privacy for a type of crime is very unusual?

Snowden interviewed by journalist Carolina Jemsby who worked for over a year to get to the 45-minute interview. In the audience sits among other Petter Ljunggren is a reporter and producer at the production company Third State power.

– It was interesting to listen to him. I believe that especially journalists sometimes have to be reminded that what we do can be monitored and tracked.

Petter Ljunggren using self some of the programs that Edward Snowden tips on to minimize their digital footprints. He also has an encrypted hard drive and is careful to always turn off the computer when he goes from there. There he began with in connection with a review he did of the suicide bomber who struck in Stockholm in December 2010.

– Then there was reason to believe that I was supervised. I worked with the people of Iraq so for their sake it was important that everything was safe, he says.

Carolina Jemsby asks Edward Snowden unless the authorities have to engage in mass surveillance, for example, terrorists. But Snowden says that never have been able to prove that this type of monitoring can prevent terrorist attacks.

– The question struck him down. It would not be entirely problem-free to reduce the monitoring but he is a little one-eyed that way. It would have been interesting if he had been able to problematize their opinions more, says Petter Ljunggren.

When Edward Snowden asked whether the Swedish intelligence service FRA broken suddenly call and Carolina Jemsby joking whether it really was just a coincidence. When Snowden’s return he gets a question from the audience how his future will look like.

– I have applied for asylum in 22 countries but so far only Russia said yes. Now I hope that Sweden and Norway is to listen to the EU’s request to grant me protection, he said.

Carolina Jemsby concludes with the hope that Edward Snowden will be involved in digging the seminar next year, and then not via the link.
