FBI memo to hack iPhone: At least 10 million – Sveriges Radio

After the attack in San Bernadino, where 14 people were shot to death had the US Federal Police FBI a locked and encrypted iPhone among the evidence gathered. To try to unlock the phone Apple sued the authority in an attempt to force the company to help with unlocking.

But before anything could be settled in court the FBI found a back way. Hackers selling a solution to get into the phone, and the FBI withdrew its lawsuit.

On Security Conference Aspen Security Forum were James Comey, the director of the FBI, a question how much authority paid to get out the previously unknown vulnerability, writes Reuters.

– Lots. More than I will make throughout my time I have left on this job, which is seven years and four months. But my opinion is that it was worth it, said James Comey.

He reveals thus not an exact amount, but based on that he now earns 1.49 million per years means that the price tag was at least SEK 10.8 million to get the phone unlocked.

David Jacoby, security researcher at Kaspersky Lab, is surprised at the high price.

– I think it is an absurdly large sum, ten million to break into a phone sound like a lot of money, said David Jacoby.

He explains at the same time to the business of selling previously unknown security has grown in recent years and the company can pay hundreds of thousands of unknown flaws, which pulls up prices. The options to pay may simply be much worse.

– You must consider that if a company would pay to get hold of the vulnerabilities they can of course be used to hack into these companies and then the loss may be even greater.

the FBI will be able to use the same security flaw to unlock the other units of the iPhone 5C running the operating system IOS 9. At least until the defect becomes known Apple and now gets a chance to correct it. The FBI will not help with, but they sit on the secret.

Eight months after the iPhone 5C was released it had sold 24 million copies, but it continued to be sold even after. However, there are no numbers on how many are still in use.

There is today no secure data supports that the FBI had no particular advantage of the information that was on the phone. An anonymous source tells CBS News that it contained something significant. CNN also has an anonymous source, claiming that it helped to answer the question whether the couple had help, for example, from family and friends. The source also says that there are no signs of contact with ice or encrypted communication occurred, something that is also considered valuable to get confirmed.
