Rumor: Apple builds its own cloud platform – 99mac

Apple wants to invest in building their own cloud platform to become less dependent on Amazon and Microsoft. But while Google seems to be a new partner in the cloud.

Apple may be about to do as Google and Facebook, namely, to build their own infrastructure to manage the company’s cloud services. This writes VentureBeat, claiming that Apple several months working on this under the name “Project McQueen”. The goal is to become less dependent on competitive platforms such as AWS (Amazon Web platform) and Microsoft Azure.

Apple reportedly purchased land in both China and Hong Kong to build more data centers for the task. An initiative to create their own cloud infrastructure would obviously cost a lot, but Apple expects that the investment would pay off already for three years.

In the current situation is a major part of the iTunes service on Microsoft Azure platform. In the future, however, is calculated Apple needs to increase so much that Microsoft’s current capacity is insufficient. Apple would have to pay significantly more than in the current situation to # Microsoft to build out their data centers. A more attractive option is to build their own solution.

Even greater demands on performance should be an underlying cause. Apple is reportedly not happy with Amazon’s Web platform regarding how quickly photos and videos can be downloaded from the cloud to the user’s iOS devices. Even where the solution may be for Apple to build their own data centers to manage a larger part of iCloud services themselves.

Can cooperate with Google

Project McQueen is reportedly still just a plan, and can still be dropped if Apple can find other, better options.

such can be arch-rival # Google, which also offers a cloud platform. Recently decided Spotify to move its operations there, and according to CRN, part of Apple’s iCloud services will soon move to the Google Cloud Platform from # Amazon.

the two giants are said to have reached an agreement in which Apple, Google will pay between 3.2 and 5 billion for management. On Twitter, writes Amir Efrati of The details of the move will take about a year, and the deal is likely to be no great economic benefit for Google.

The Apple moving some of their services to Google’s platform do not exclude that the company also plans its own solution in the long term.
