Ransomware spreads in popular Mac app – 99mac

BitTorrent client Transmission has been used to spread a ‘Ransomware, a malicious app that takes your computer hostage.

the transmission is a popular bittorrent client for Mac, and was recently updated to version 2.90. Users who updated the app last week, runs the risk of being hit by the first active so-called Ransomware app for Mac. This report security company Palo Alto Networks who dubbed the new malicious program to Keranger.

The regular version of Transmission During Friday March 4 was replaced by a modified version that contains the malware Users who home transmission from the official website thus have their Mac infected by Keranger, which is activated after three days. Ransomware program encrypts more of your computer files and then demand a ransom to unlock them. Users who update automatically by the app will not be affected.

The fake version of Transmission using a valid developer certificate, but other than Transmissions usual. Apple has removed Kerangers certificate which means that it can no longer be installed on a Mac, but computers that already have the installeratkan still run the program.

Transmission has updated its app to version 2.92, which also removes the fake version. Doubtful users can also app Activity Monitor to ensure that there is a process running named Kernel_service . Note that the name is similar to the Kernel_task , which is part of OS X and to be active.
