PTS: National broadband grants must be doubled if the country will be connected – IDG.se

The state money to build the fiber network in rural areas is not enough by a long shot. It would take more than twice as much money in the next two years, according to the National Post and Telecom Agency, PTS.

– PTS has received information from all county councils in the country and now it is our assessment that further upwards four billion crowns in state aid for broadband development in rural areas to meet the demand, says PTS analyst Andreas Wigren for Agricultural Business newspaper ATL.

Today, there are 3.25 billion allocated to the State broadband subsidies during the period 2014 to 2020. the sum would in other words have more than doubled for all applications to be granted.

the government broadband support is supposed to be helped to fund the expansion of the fiber network outside urban areas. According to ATL, today there are around 625,000 households in the Swedish countryside, just over ten percent have a fiber connection.

The refund is granted only if there is no commercial operator seeking to build on the site. The state accounts for between 40 and 70 percent of the cost, depending on the county. The rest pays the accommodation and other private operators.
