Erik the Holy bentätare than today’s 35-year-olds – Sveriges Radio

– We have measured the femur and discovered that he has 20-30 percent denser bones than men of the same age today, says osteoporosis doctor Osten Ljunggren, at University Hospital in Uppsala. He has studied Erik the Holy legs as if they came from a normal, living patient. Eric IX was 35 years old when he died.

The question is whether the people of that time had denser bones than we and were less osteoporosis. According to Sabine Stone, who is an archaeologist and osteolog at Uppsala University, Campus Gotland, which has led the work of Erik the Holy legs, suggesting another ongoing research that our ancestors had strong legs.

– We are working on right osteoporosis and has done bone density measurement of 400 mediaeval individuals from different parts of the country and we have seen that in general it is good density in the legs, says Sabine way if the results are not pre compiled yet, says Sabine Stone.

the bones that are thought to have belonged to Erik the Holy suggest that he should have good genes notes osteoporosis doctor Osten Ljunggren. Bone density at that age are considered to be due to 70-80 percent on inheritances, but diet and exercise also play a role.

What would you say to this man, if he were your living patient?

– Continue to live as you do, says Osten Ljunggren.
