Saturday announced Karolinska Institute that they re-open the investigation of research misconduct around the surgeon Paolo Macchiarinis operations and research.

Bengt Gerdin, professor emeritus at the University of Uppsala, was one of those who in May last year investigated Macchiarini. It’s an upset Gerdin as SvD get by telephone on Saturday afternoon.

In its report he came to KI surgeon Macchiarini guilty of research fraud – that the scientific language is called fraud.

It was in May last year. Even so, KI’s former Vice Chancellor Anders Hamsten in its decision until it was about a milder form – “negligence” – and acquitted Paolo Macchiarini three months later in August, an acquittal as himself on Saturday runs from in his article in Dagens Nyheter.

Anders Hamsten writes, among other things, that it “seems very likely that my decision in this case was wrong”:

Bengt Gerdin says now Saturday:

– You said they could manufacture the new trachea with artificial material, using stem cells to grow into the body. And they said, especially to have achieved this in turn could be the first step to an industry with manufacturing and opportunity to cure patients in a systematic way.

But then the fact that now received the Rector Anders Hamsten to resign.

– But you had not succeeded despite having said it, says Bengt Gerdin and continues:

– in Bo Lindqvist documentaries now in January, reacted to many when facts presented, including researchers. Anders Hamsten said: I have no idea. But he had some idea – because it was my investigation.

Earlier this week, also came news that the lawyer Sten Heckscher will lead a review of the CI managed surgeon Paolo Macchiarini.

– I think that there are good people in the investigation, says Bengt Gerdin which although it is critical of the investigation ordered by the Board.

He said that the board according to the Higher Education ensure that there are over internal control that works in a satisfactory manner.

– it is not clear that they made it. Therefore, it is a crazy solution that the board ordered the investigation. I think the responsible minister should have initiated the inquiry to the minister sitting outside. Then they would automatically also assessed the board.

When SvD looking for the departing rector Anders Hamsten to respond to the criticism, he refers to the Rector Council, Jan Carlstedt-Duke.

– Anders has resigned and said all the debate the article, and he is therefore no longer the investigation to do, he says.

Why do Hamsten in the documentary that he had not known that it can move about dishonesty?

– KI investigation as Gedin did and that showed on the misconduct is not the only thing we took our overall assessment. Among many observations were statements from doctors on the Island, which came after Bob, and that was an important part of our assessment in that it concerned negligence, says Carlstedt-Duke.

He says that the documentary showed a completely different picture than the opinion of the Island described and thus concluded – that’s why Hamsten wrote as he did in the debate article.

– There are now data from the Island that we should look over and see if it may involve dishonesty in any case, says Carlstedt-Duke.
