Mythomaniac or genius? Perhaps Macchiarini both – Expressen

Clearly Paolo Macchiarini is one of the recent most huassade doctor. He is the charismatic surgeon charmed almost everyone. Both venerable institutions, heavy scientists, medical colleagues and journalists.

Employers hoped enough to Macchiarini would solve transplantation medicine much difficulty – the organ shortage and the problem is that the organ being rejected. It would spread the glory and even more status to Sweden’s prettiest institutions and snobbish most hospitals.

Maybe did hope and charm people blind? New revelations show that there are serious problems with “super surgeon” and his stories.

Anyone who wants to read a hair-raising tale of a psychopathic liar recommended Vanity Fair’s long story. From a Swedish perspective, the most serious is that the surgeon, according to the newspaper’s investigation, falsified his resume and lied about their professor titles. He is still involved in legal proceedings in Italy concerning fraud.

The story also tells the award-winning journalist Benita Alexander about the surgeon courted her, boasted about his many celebrity patients and promised the pope to marry them in his summer residence. It would be this year’s wedding, with celebrities like Obama, Putin, Kofi Annan, and Elton John on the guest list. But it was all a big scam. Macchiarini was also the husband.

SVT new review focuses on Paolo Macchiarinis medical act.

Already in the first program revealed that the surgeon very well knew that there were major problems with plastic in the artificial luftstruparna already after the first operation.

The doctor knew that patients were exposed to great risks. Meanwhile, the patients were seriously ill, for some were super surgeon is the last hope.

The first SVT program raises more questions than it answers. How far doctors should go in the name of science? Exactly how untested methods may be used at Swedish hospitals? Where risks unethical big? And how much really knew the sick patients and their families about the dangers? They were sufficiently well informed to take wise decisions?

The producer Bosse Lindquist promise to review in any case to answer the question about the surgeon guilty of research fraud. I really hope so.

The case of Paolo Macchiarini is far from finished. New scandals seem to pop up all the time. A question I want you to answer is how well the Karolinska Institute and Karolinska Hospital checking the merits of their star signings? How objective is the Institute’s own review of the surgeon been? And medical collegiality stopped sound critical questioning of his methods?

But it probably needed more investigative journalism to get real answers.
