Low power and long range – Halow will connect to internet of things – IDG.se

Wifi Alliance finally clubbed a new networking standard for the internet of things. Halow use less power and have a longer range than current wifi.

WiFi standard Halow, or 802.11ah as it is really called, using the 900 MHz band, instead of the current wifi which is on 2.4 GHz. The lower frequency allows also that it is easier to penetrate walls, and the range is almost twice the current wifi – up to one kilometer at best.

The downside is of course To speed will suffer, but on the other hand, can handle many online gadgets with limited bandwidth. The maximum speed is a modest 18 Mbps.

 Products using Halow will appear on the market soon, but it will take until 2018 before the Wi-Fi Alliance has a proper certification system in place.

 

 In practical terms, it will need a new router at home to use gadgets communicate via Halow. But according to WiFi Alliance, in which over 700 companies are included, many of tomorrow’s routers support both the new 900 MHz band, and for the older bands of 2.4 and 5 GHz.
