Important step for the final repository in Forsmark clear – New Technology

The nuclear industry waste company SKB (Swedish nuclear fuel management) would partly build a final repository for spent nuclear fuel at Forsmark and a facility in Oskarshamn to encapsulate the waste in copper canisters.

Most controversial is the application to build a detention under the so-called copper canister method (KBS3) been. It already took place in 2011 – and for five years has been SSM requested more under the surface as a supplement.

Now, after five years, believes SSM application to be complete. Therefore, they have today announced the application, together with the application for a permit to build the encapsulation plant.

The decision means that the Agency can start examining the substantive issues in their entirety.

– The fact that we are now saying that the application is complete does not mean that we can not ask for more completions, says Ansi Gerhardsson, Head of the SSM.

At the same time now invited the public that opinions about the plants, by 30 April.

If you have now received all the documentation you wanted to get some of SKB?

– Basically, in some issues we had slightly different views about whether the information is sufficient.

Is then your assessment of the issue of the copper canisters could corrode in oxygen-free water down there in the repository now settled?

– No, it is not, we review still it says Ansi Gerhardsson.

– We have not yet landed in if we, in this mode of examination, the need to request more documents or not.

SSM will later this spring present their conclusions about the place and method to the Land and Environment Court, which in parallel with SSM’s nuclear investigation, working with the environmental assessment of the repository.

The court has asked the various consultation bodies to submit their judgments on the merits past the 30 March.

– The focus for us is to look at the big picture, the whole concept of the repository. It is well known that we look at the bentonite clay, how the rock acts, the capsule may work and be durable for long time, she says. We will of course participate in court hearings in the fall and see if there are more issues, says Ansi Gerhardsson.

Is it possible to reverse the multi-annual review process if it forward turns out that a repository options need?

– There’s nothing that says that SKB will be approved just because we kept you so long, and examined it. But it will address issues that show that this method is not working as it is supposed, so it is not sure that we give our approval. It depends on what’s not working and it may have an impact on long-term safety.

Although the Land and Environmental Court at Nacka District Court has today King made SKB’s final repository application and the company’s application to build an encapsulation facility in Oskarshamn.
