Intel and Samsung in new collaboration on wireless charging – IDG.se

Airfuel Alliance

Today there three methods that are fighting to become the standard for wireless charging, but now two of them together. In total 195 companies, including Duracell, Intel and Samsung, forming the consortium Airfuel Alliance.

Cordless charging is a rapidly growing market, but with a clear problem: there is no standard solution. Therefore Airfuel Alliance is important, it is as if the VHS and Betamax merged instead of waiting out one format’s death.

The parties have already respective version of the wireless charging: one via magnetic induction and through magnetic resonance. According to a press release should Airfuel Alliance, at least initially, support both methods, but in the long term, they want to “go beyond magnetism” and create one standard for wireless charging.

 - The introduction of Airfuel is a clear step in the right direction for proper wireless charging. Airfuel Alliance is determined to revive technology that uses Airful, while we are open to further consolidation in the industry, says the consortium’s president Ron Resnick said in a statement.

The last words are perhaps the most important. For although the two big players come together there is a third, even larger.

The big competitor named Wireless Power Consortium (WPC) and is the market leader with its charging system Qi. They gather more than 220 members with big names like Asus, LG, Microsoft, Nokia, Sony and Verizon on the list. But with his statement, leaving Ron Resnick door open to collaborations also with WPC.
