Research for seal-safe fishing methods – Swedish Radio

Right now Pursue research in Haparanda archipelago to develop seal-proof methods to be used throughout the country.

seal damage costs the Swedish fishermen around SEK 35 million annually. In pace with the increased seal population increases the need for seal-safe fishing gear.

Today, there are between 40,000 and 50,000 gray seals, and around 20 000 ringed seals after the Swedish coastline. Seals major problems for fishermen.

– In the spring when I go fishing whitefish after the ice, I see hundreds of seals on the ice floes, I know that it is useless to put out the yarn, or when, it’s just great holes and all the fish is eaten, said Viktor concurrent as fishermen on Seskarö in Haparanda, far into the Gulf of Bothnia.

Today, the laxfällorna good against the seals. Right now conducted experiments in Haparanda Archipelago to develop fisheries for virtually all species except salmon.

– We develop the old-time seine fishing to suit the day’s fishing. It now works on a large scale, but now we’ll scale down the method predict that it works from small open fishing boats, so that all fishermen in Sweden should be able to use this method, says Sven-Gunnar Lunneryd, fosrskare at SLU in Lysekil.

seine can be described as a bag by pulling or from an anchored boat with the help of a small winch. Because it is an active fishing so the seals do not have time to loot the tools.

The tests made on Viktor Medströms boat is to find the seal-safe fish other than salmon, caught a few weeks in early summer, with gear fare good against the seals. Says Sven-Gunnar Lunneryd:

– Now, it is a good seal-proof alternative to: perch, flounder, whitefish, pike and cod. We know that this method is efficient, provides a good quality and also in an energy efficient manner. It is hoped that the ruling Swedish fishermen will be able to use this method already for spring.
