Pebble not afraid of competition from Apple Watch – IDG.se

Apple Watch began sold in the US market last Friday. They sold a million watches a day. Compare that with Android Wear that got away almost as many throughout 2014. Only then will the pebble, which is also located in the millions.

– Just over a million, and it is during the past 18 months, says Eric Migicovsky, 28 years old CEO of Pebble.

Pebbles hero watch

Pebble Watch is smart watches that became large through Kickstarter.
But it limps precariously to outright compare Pebble with Apple Watch. Pebbles history started seven years ago when Eric Migicovsky was studying in the Netherlands.

– I rode everywhere and wanted to see who called and sent text messages without the whole time having to reach for my phone. The first thing I realized was a bicycle computer which showed text messages, he says to IDG.se.

At home in the dorm he experimented further with a broken picked Nokia 3310, an Arduino microcontroller cards and little else. The result was a prototype for the smart watches we see today.

– It took little more than four years before we had a finished product. For the most part because we were new in consumer electronics, we had never developed a product. It has evolved a lot since then, an omnipresent speed Internet access, services and other people who live very discreetly on your wrist, said Eric Migicovsky.

Eric Migicovsky, Pebble
Eric Migicovsky, CEO Pebble, got the idea for the watch during their studies.
The first time they sold was called inPulse, but with no success. Despite it reminded in many ways about today’s Apple Watch.

– It had OLED color display, battery life was 24 hours, it was not waterproof and worked only with a telephone, says Eric Migicovsky.

Instead, it was with a Kickstarter campaign in 2012 as the Pebble ended up in the spotlight. On Kickstarter can entrepreneurs and startups raise money for their ideas through crowdfunding, and Pebble set new records. In a few weeks they received ten million US dollars, and many thought they came up with something completely new.

Several things were changed compared to inPulse. Pebble was waterproof with a battery life of seven days. The screen was always on, without pressing a button was needed and it worked well in direct sunlight.

– We were not the first to make a smart watch, but we were the first who did it well. But no, we did not expect such a success.

In recent months ‘ve all been talking about Apple Watch. The world’s most valuable company would release a bell was no talk about, and an overall tech world sat benched when the news was presented in early March. So what makes an upstart with a good idea? Launches his watch just before reaching new record.

When Pebble Time was released on Kickstarter at the end of February – a few weeks before Apple Watch was launched – reached the the collection target of 17 minutes. But at the same time, they have been criticized because they used Kickstarter wrong. An established business does not need the site, said the critics. Eric Migicovsky disagree, and argue that the pebble rather spread the idea of Kickstarter to new audiences.

– And for Three weeks ago, we promised to provide one million dollars for development projects in smartstraps, including via Kickstarter, says Eric Migicovsky to IDG.se.

And smartstraps is something he likes to talk about. No one could have missed the trend of Quantized self, smart bracelets and sensors of every kind kind that measures both one’s own body and things around us. Nor has the Pebble missed.

– Some want have small bells and others want watches with every sensor built. But we can not make everyone happy by combining everything, because then the clock very large and you begin to lose battery life, so we made a compromise.

I think wearables are the next steps. They will be very important in our lives.

Instead of deploying the clock so la the a port that allows third party developers to build physical accessories clock.

– I’m very excited about a gps bracelet, so I can take a bike ride and track it without having to have my phone with me. It is also possible with an NFC bracelet for payments or a battery bracelet that extends the battery life from seven days to over a month, says Eric Migicovsky.

With a million preordered Watch Apple devices, the market for wearables opened up for real, says Eric Migicovsky. And he is positive about the future.

– Wearables is next big thing. We used to have desktops and laptops, then we went to smartphones. I believe wearable next step. They will be very important in our lives.

And competition with the Apple is only beneficial, according Eric Migicovsky.

– There are always been competitors, but this is so far the largest. And that’s exciting. I think Apple will open up the market massively, getting more and more smart watches. But the simple fact is that the Pebble provide a better experience at lower prices, more phones. IOS accounts for 20 percent of the market. Pebble supports both iOS and Android, so I think we will do well.
