Aluminium can be an alternative to conventional batteries – evertiq.se

Researchers at Stanford University in the US have developed a high performance aluminum battery is fast charged, is persistent and inexpensive. According to the researchers, the new technology prove to be a safe alternative to many of the currently commercial batteries.

– We have developed a rechargeable aluminum battery that can replace existing storage devices such as alkaline batteries, which are harmful the environment, and lithium-ion batteries, which can sometimes catch fire, said Hongjie Dai, a professor of chemistry at Stanford Stanford News.

– Our new battery will not catch fire even if you drill right through it.

Aluminium has long been an attractive material for batteries, mainly because of its low cost, low flammability and the high charge storage capacity .Forskare have long tried – without much success – to develop a commercially viable aluminum-ion battery. A major challenge has been to find materials that can produce enough voltage after repeated cycles of charge and discharge, Prints Stanford News.

An aluminum-ion battery consists of two electrodes: a negatively charged anode made of aluminum and a positively charged cathode.

– People have tried different kinds of materials for the cathode. We accidentally discovered that a simple solution is to use graphite, which is basically carbon. In our study, we identified some types of graphite material that gives us very good performance, explained Hongjie Dai.
