Electric bike is becoming more common – Swedish Radio

Elcykeln is becoming an increasingly common vehicles on our roads. Therefore, more research is needed in order to plan roads and cycle paths.

– As you run significantly faster when you have electric bike makes you you often drive on more people. It becomes more interactions so there are risks there, says Jonas Bärgman, research group leader in accident prevention at Chalmers University of Technology.

Sales of electric bicycles continues to increase – during last cycle year, sales increased by 50 percent, according to an estimate by the Swedish Cycling Fabrikant and Wholesale Society made.

In here on a bicycle shop in Jönköping stands bikes with battery boxes under the rack tightly in long lines.

Here doubled sales of e-bikes last year and elcyklarna sold for the first time more than the usual bikes – says Harald Dinkel who runs the store.

– There is great interest in electric bike. Above all motorists coming in and buying cycle. Instead of having their second car then sell the other car and buy an electric bike instead. It is expensive to drive a car today and it is much cheaper to operate a bicycle, he said.

A elykel sounds almost ingesting though it is faster than regular bikes – why it can be difficult to perceive how fast an electric bicycle driving.

– It can be difficult to perceive how fast it goes for 25 km’s pretty fast anyway, says Harald Dinkel.

An electric bike gets up to run at 25 km / h but if the cyclist is pedaling on the course it can go faster.

There have been Many studies how the relatively new vehicle affect traffic safety and it would take more studies according to Jonas Bärgman at Chalmers.

– If you do not know quite how riders will behave as it is difficult to plan, especially for those who build roads and towns. So there is a clear need for increased research in the bike and especially on elcykelsidan, he said.
