Winter vomiting disease takes a lot of resources – Swedish Radio

Easier sampling and thereby faster notification can save resources in health care and give patients better care for suspected Norwalk virus.

This is presented in a doctoral thesis in the weeks and the timing could not have been better chosen, because soon pulls year-infection of the unpleasant virus infection started. On Thursday, the physician should Lars Gustavsson defend her thesis.

– Previous left one stool sample but now we have investigated whether one can take a swab from the rectum instead, says Lars Gustavsson.

How much faster to get notified when?

– I think you can save one day and it’s pretty much when it’s such a stressful situation with a lack of space in health care.

In the past it was called stomach flu, but 10 years ago, something happened. Then came nyordet Norwalk virus, which is the name of the fenomon now visible in many parts of the world, where large outbreak occurs, people who become infected with calicivirus get violent vomiting, body aches and huvdvärk. It is very contagious and for those who are old and fragile it can be life-threatening. Therefore, research is now widely says Lars Gustavsson.

– Not only is it painful for those who suffer, then does outbreaks that at times, have to close all or part of wards, says Lars Gustavsson.

Will it save money in health care?

– Above all, we hope that you will be able to use resources in health care in an optimal way.
