Umeå to be sustainable model – Västerbotten Folkblad

Umeå. Umeå University receives three million from the Energy Agency, together with Umeå municipality to find out how Umeå residents can become more energy-efficient.

– Umeå University and Umeå Municipality has developed a Memorandum of Understanding with the goal of becoming the Northern force for sustainable urban development. The research project will contribute important knowledge to reach our goal, says Agneta Marell, Vice Rector for collaboration and innovation at Umeå University.

Researchers will examine how energy efficient Umeå residents behave, both at home and at work. They will also test and evaluate how smart, technology affects behavior in terms of energy use and travel.

– We will work across disciplines to try to find out how best to stimulate an energy-smart behavior. In collaboration with the Municipality of Umeå we will identify current and future objectives and measures, says Annika Nordlund, project manager and associate professor in the Department of Psychology.

The researchers will also study the sustainability of housing renovation.

According to the University, Umeå is a very suitable municipality to study because there are large amounts of data available that reflect how Umeå residents use electricity, and how they travel and recycle. In addition, Umeå Municipality applied to become European Green Capital.

– The appropriation is very pleasing. The project makes it possible to develop Umeå as a role model in sustainable urban development, both nationally and internationally, says Hans Lindberg, Mayor, City of Umeå.
