OS X and Linux suffers from security holes – 99mac

A serious bug in the command prompt Bash commonly used in Linux systems and OS X may under certain circumstances be used to run malicious code not only locally in the computer but also via network.

Now comes news of a new security vulnerabilities affecting Linux and OS X. The problem is said to be serious and is compared with the Heart Bleed discovered in April this year.

The bug is in the command prompt Bash which is common in the Linux world. It is also the default command prompt in OS X. The bug is called “Bug Bash” or “shell shock” and may under certain circumstances be used to run malicious code not only locally but also in the computer via the network.

OS X 10.9.5, also called for the Mavericks come with Bash version 3.2 which seems to contain the bug. There is already bug fixes out there for some Linux distributions, but Apple has not yet released a fix or commented on the issue.

More technically versed OS X users can follow the instructions at Stack Exchange to update Bash on their own.
